Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse

Department: Emergency Department 

Reports To:  DON & ADON

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

Assists with the activities of the Emergency Room.  Assists the Emergency Room Director and in reviewing, revising, or establishing procedures, techniques, and policies for the Emergency Room.  Keeps abreast with the latest knowledge, techniques, and technological equipment in the field of Emergency Room nursing care.  Provides Emergency Room nursing care to patients. OSHA bloodborne pathogens class I, and other required training. 

Qualifications: 

  • Education:  Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing.  
  • Personal Job Related Skills:  Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Licensure, Registry or Certification:  Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Texas. CPR, PALS, and ACLS required. CEN and TNCC preferred.  (TNCC required within 1 year of hire.)
  • Experience:
    1. Prior Work Experience:  One year experience as a Professional Registered Nurse preferred.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements:  Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking. Bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, and lifting up to 50+ pounds. Occasional lifting or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Plans, assesses, directs and participates in the delivery of emergency room nursing care.
    • Participates in setting standards for patient care and nursing practice in emergency room nursing.
    • Records, evaluates, and treats cardiac arrhythmias appropriately
    • Manages the patient with respiratory insufficiency and/or difficulty including assisting with intubations, basic interpretation of ABG results, proper suctioning techniques, and assuring proper endotracheal tube placement, assembling appropriate O2 supplies/equipment, and having knowledge of the various O2 apparatuses.
    • Consistently titrates drug therapies, recognizes interactions,  

      obtains written hemodynamic parameters, and exercises  

                  judgment regarding frequency of recording all monitored   

                  values.

    • Cares for the patients with invasive lines (central, arterial, cut downs) assembles, calibrates and assists with insertions.
    • Demonstrates ability to care for the patient with a head injury to include: complete neurological assessment with  

                documentation, medications, positioning.

    • Cares for patients requiring invasive procedures of 

      thoracentesis, chest tube insertion, including assembly of   

                equipment, explanation of procedure to patient, and     

                 assisting physician with insertion.                                                                      

   

    • Manages care of patients requiring intravenous antithrombolytic agents according to established procedures.
    • Manages care of patients with fractures including CSM checks below injury with documentation, proper body alignment, and assisting with casting.
    • Manages patients with medical diagnosis (R/O MI, Diabetes, COPD, GI Bleed, etc.) including stating pathophysiology for specific diagnosis, documenting nursing interventions on the ER form, stating signs and symptoms of complications for diagnosis and notifying physician of any changes in condition in a timely manner.
    • Performs triage and medical screening on multiple patients, evaluates and prioritizes them according to hemodynamic stability, loss of limb, and treats appropriately.
    • Interprets lab values including hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, white count, electrolytes, and clotting times.
    • Provides psychosocial care to the patients and family.
    • Provides care appropriate for the neonate and the  pediatric,

        adolescent and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated                                                                                                              

                  knowledge of the principles of growth and development over

                  the life span.

  • Assesses and interprets data on neonate and the pediatric, 

                  adolescent and geriatric patients’ status to identify 

                  patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs and 

                  provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.

  • Gives technical and direct support to those supervised who plan 

                  and administer nursing care.

  • Arranges for transport of patients by air / ground ambulance  
  • Accurately maintains and records the use of controlled 

                  substances.

          

  • Participates in quality assurance by becoming aware of 

                  problems and resolving them.

  • Initiates and performs CPR and/or other basic emergency 

                  measures when necessary.

  • Differentiates between acute and non-acute emergency patients 

                  who present themselves to the Emergency Room.

  1. Assess, plans, implements, and evaluates individualized care and  

      needs for each patient and documents on the nursing care plan.

    • Administers, observes, charts, and reports effects of drugs, 

      intravenous procedures, and other therapeutic and diagnostic 

                  measures in a safe and accurate manner.

    • Establishes treatment priorities based on medical and nursing   

      diagnosis.

    • Develops discharge plans with the physicians, the patients’ 

      families and other available resources.

    • Documents on trauma patient following the mandated audit 

Filters / indicators as required by DSHS in keeping with the   level 4 trauma designation.

    • Documents using medical terminology and maintains an    Emergency room record that is medico legally acceptable reflective of all nursing care provided and the patient’s response to care given.
    • Coordinates the care needs of multiple patients prioritizing patient care to ensure patient needs are met in a timely fashion, that quality is delivered and the patient flow is enhanced.
    • Complies with legal consent, transfer protocols and other legislative requirements that preserve patient rights and ensure appropriateness of care.
    • Able to rapidly problem solve and deliver calm, efficient care in a high stress situation. 

Other Significant Requirements:

  • Maintain HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
  • Follow all policies and procedures set forth by Mitchell County Hospital District.
  • Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
  • Follows aseptic procedures and precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
  • Interacts with patient family, employees, and other departments is a considerate, helpful and courteous manner as observed by Nurse Manager and peers.
  • Fosters mature professional relationship with fellow employees in a courteous friendly manner as measured by management observation and peer input.
  • Participates in in-service programs, in safety, infection control, staff meetings, committee meetings, and assigned yearly education.
