Position Summary:
Performs the primary functions of a professional nurse leader in assessing, planning, directing, and evaluating patient care in an operating room, PACU, and Central Sterile Supply. Manages supplies and equipment, supervises all personnel on the unit, and promotes team efforts with physicians and personnel of other departments.
Qualifications:
- Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
- Personal Job Related Skills: Demonstrated ability in nursing practice. Leadership and management abilities and effective oral and written communication skills. Basic computer knowledge.
- Experience: Five years’ experience as a Registered Nurse in operating or recovery rooms. One year supervisory experience preferred. Basic ECG course, current CPR certification.
- Physical and Mental Requirements: Duties of the position require extended periods of standing and walking, bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional heavy lifting when moving or supporting patients who may suddenly become weak or helpless.
Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills:
- Plans, assesses, supervises, and participates in the delivery of operating room nursing care.
- Participates in setting standards for the patient care and nursing practice in operating room nursing.
- Determines the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care.
- Manages care of patient receiving intravenous drug therapy and monitors hemodynamic stability according to established procedure.
- Assists with various surgical procedures including but not limited to general sugery, ophthalmology, urology, etc. with understanding of the pathophysiology involved.
- Cares for surgical patients immediately post operatively including statement of surgical procedure, IV care, fluid and electrolyte maintenance, monitors adequate urine output, incisional dressing drains, NG, recovery from anesthesia, adequate ventilation, O2 therapy, vital signs and signs and symptoms of complications, and reports them to the physician in a timely manner.
- Assesses patients post anesthesia to determine when the patient is to be transferred from the recovery room.
- Maintains proficiency in proper aseptic technique in the operating room, and autoclaves instruments if necessary.
- Demonstrates ability to recognize improperly functioning equipment. Assists in maintenance of equipment for proper function and safety.
- Provides nursing measures to prevent any loss of skin integrity and maintain safety in the OR.
- Recognizes emergency situations and institutes the established procedure for the specific situation.
- Maintains accurate and timely operating and recovery room documentation.
- Provides psychosocial care to the patient and family including assessment of needs and provides nursing interventions according to policy and procedure.
- Proves care appropriate for the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients served based on demonstrated knowledge of the principals of growth and development of the life span.
- Assesses and interprets data on the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients’ status to identify patients’ requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.
- Evaluates the quality of nursing care in compliance with the established standards of nursing practice.
- Evaluates nursing care policies, procedures, and practices and recommends additions or revisions.
- Continually evaluates nursing care provided by reviewing care plans, assessing patients, reviewing charts, and participating in quality assurance activities.
- Participates with the Chief Nursing Officer in the evaluating on in-service programs, nursing orientation, and the achievement of nursing objectives.
- Identifies problem areas of patient care and assists in formulating plans of action or taking action to solve them.
- Maintains the required inventory of supplies and equipment in the operating room.
- Assesses the supplies needed and establishes a system for acquisition, storage, control, and issue.
- Determines equipment needs and assures equipment is maintained in good working condition.
- Determines supply item requirements and consults with the Chief Nursing Officer to develop, review, and revise forms and reports.
- Assures crash cart, emergency equipment, and oxygen resuscitation and checked at the beginning of each shift.
- Facilitates favorable relationships within the operating room, and with the Medical Staff, and other hospital departments an seeks input regarding nursing care.
- Maintains positive and effective relationships with other departments and the Medical Staff.
- Consults with the physician to resolve problems and to obtain and provide patient care input.
- Maintains open communication and problem solving atmosphere with other departments to achieve quality patient care.
- Assists with the management of Nursing Department functions and supervises the operating room employees.
- Assists with the development of departmental policies, procedures, and practices and monitors for compliance and consistency once established.
- Provides input and facilitates staff input into decision affecting nursing practice.
- Assists in selecting, hiring, orientating, developing, evaluating, disciplining, and recommends termination of unit employees in compliance with hospital policy.
- Participates in the preparation of the department budget and monitoring the utilization of approved budget resources with special attention to assuring appropriate staffing and supply levels.
- Monitors and controls the utilization of the unit’s approved budgeted resources.
Other Significant Requirements:
- Maintain HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
- Follow all policies and procedures set forth by Mitchell County Hospital District.
- Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
- Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.
- Follows aseptic procedures and precautions when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
- Interacts with Medical Staff members, family members, and staff members of other departments on a continuous basis.
- Participates in in-service programs, in safety, infection control, staff meetings, committee meetings and assigned yearly education.
- Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Hospital.

Work Schedule:
- 7am-3:30pm Monday-Friday, some on call required
- 30 minute lunch break
